This verb is used for persons or animals. In each of the following forms, い can be replaced by 居.

Present informal tense: I exist .. iru .. いる or 居る

Present formal tense: I exist .. imasu .. います or 居ます

Present informal negative tense: I don't exist .. inai .. いない or 居ない

Present formal negative tense: I do not exist .. imasen .. いません

Past informal tense: I existed .. ita .. いた

Past formal tense: I exist .. imashita .. いました

Past informal negative tense: I didn't exist .. inakatta .. いなかった

Past formal negative tense: I did not exist .. imasen deshita .. いませんでした

Imperative informal mood: exist .. iyo .. いよ

Imperative formal mood: please exist .. ite kudasai .. いてください

Imperative negative mood: don't exist .. iru na .. いるな

Imperative formal negative mood: please do not exist .. inaide kudasai .. いないでください

Te form - conjunctive stem: exist .. ite .. いて

Continuative stem: existing .. i .. い

1) There is a girl in the car.

Kuruma ni on'nanoko ga imasu.

車に 女の子が います

2) I am still in the audience seat today.

Mata kyō mo bōchō seki ni imasu.

また今日も傍聴席にいます

3) Before, I had a bicycle.

Mae wa, watashi wa jitensha o motte imashita.

前は、私は自転車を持っていました

Note: I had .. motte imashita .. 持っていました

4) Korisawa sings "There is no boyfriend".

Koresawa ga utau "kareshi wa imasen".

コレサワが歌う"彼氏はいません"。

5) It is said that Prince Shotoku is such, but it has been said recently that he was not actually.

Son'na Shōtoku taishi desu ga, jitsuwa inakatta node wanai ka to saikin iwa rete imasu.

そんな聖徳太子ですが、実はいなかったのではないかと最近言われています。

Literally: such Shotoku prince is ‘ga’, in_reality he_was_not so it_is_not ‘ka’ ‘to’ recently been_said
