can do .. dekimasu .. できます

 

can’t do .. dekinaku .. できなく

 

1) I can climb mountains. .. Watashi wa yama o noboru koto ga dekimasu. .. 私は山を登ることができます。

 

2) Can you play the violin? .. Anata wa baiorin o hajiku koto ga dekimasu ka? .. あなたはバイオリンを弾くことができますか?

 

3) Eiichiro cannot drink milk. .. Eiichirō wa gyūnyū o nomu koto ga dekimasen. .. 栄一郎は牛乳を飲むことができません。

 

4) The deer could jump over the fence. .. Shika wa saku no ue o tobikoeru koto ga dekimashita. .. 鹿は柵の上を飛び越えることができた。

 

5) Midori couldn't read the letter. .. Midori wa tegami o yomu koto ga dekimasen deshita. .. ミドリは手紙を読むことができませんでした。

 

read .. yomu .. 読む (infinitive)

 

Sentence pattern

NOUN1 wa NOUN2 o VERB1 koto ga VERB2 (AUXILIARY VERB)

 

NOUN1 is the topic noun, from the Japanese point of view, the subject noun from the English point of view.
