Sometimes the i in a Japanese syllable is silent.

Examples

1) We went back.

Watashi-tachi wa kaerimashita.

私たちは帰りました。

2) and

soshite

そして

One might get the impression that i is always silent in the syllable shi, but this is not true. In the following words, i is not silent. Look for pronunciations on Forvo.

Examples

1) Shinkansen (bullet train)

shinkansen

新幹線

2) Work

shigoto

仕事

3) quiet

shizuka

しずか

It seems hard to find a written rule for this, but it seems that i is silent in the two syllables shitx where x can be any vowel.
