Do you remember the possesive pronouns mano, tavo, jo, jos, mūsų, jūsų,which are the genitive case of , tu, jis, ji, mes, jūs, jie, jos?

Jis yra mano brolis. (He is my brother.)
Ji yra tavo sesė. (She is your your sister.)
Latviai yra mūsų draugai. (Latvians are our friends).

When you want to express a relationship of the subject with objects that the subject possesses, you use the possesive pronoun savo:

Jis skambina savo sesei. He is calling his (own) sister.
Ji skambina savo sesei. She is calling her (own) sister.
Mes skambiname savo tėvams. We are calling our (own) parents.

Mano brolis laukia savo draugo. My brother is waiting for his friend.

Ar tu lauki savo dėstytojo? Are you waiting for your lecturer?

Tavo draugas man duoda savo kompiuterį. Your friend gives me his computer.
Jūsų mama gauna savo televizorių. Your mother is getting her TV.

Shouldn't, "Jis skambina savo sesei," be "Ji skambina savo sesei."?

I'm a little confused... what's the difference between the sentence "I hate my teacher" and "I like my car"?
Why would you say "Aš nekenčiu savo mokytojo" but then say "Man patinka mano mašina" ?? They seem like the same format? Can anybody help?

Because in the first sentence, the word "Aš" represents the subject, and "mokytojo" is the object. In that case, using "savo" is correct because the object is possessed by the subject. In the second sentence, the subject is "mašina" and the word "man" is the indirect object, the person which the action is being done to. Using "savo" would not be correct because "man" is not the subject of the sentence.
