I suggesting putting this up in the links:

http://vertimas.vdu.lt/twsas/

Just pop your text in the top, and click Vertimas (translate).

It's the first I've seen of any automatic translation for Lithuanian. Could any expert level bilingualists ( i made that word up, sorry ) comment on how good it is?

Currently it appears to only do English to Lithuanian. It seems pretty good to me. Here's waiting for an update to do the reverse as well.

edit: hrm, seems to only be EN->LT, not both as i first wrote.

It's so cool I hate it. :x
I mean, it can already speak better and faster lithuanian than me. :(
Well, it sometimes looses the referent, but if you write well formed english sentences they are mostly going to be translated to well formed lithuanian ones. I can't say anything about the acceptability of them, that's to say, whether they sound natural or not, unluckily I haven't lived in Lithuania to be able to tell that.

It looks awesome, but I can't really know when there are translation mistakes.

I wonder who made it and how it works. Maybe it's easier to do with Lituanian and English than with other laguages because they have a lot of similarities.

Actually that's the main reason why there are a lot of mistakes - the languages are very different, Joce :).

It seems to have been made by some VDU academics using some software (you can download some applications too: http://vertimas.vdu.lt/twsas/PlugIns/Setup.aspx).

I don't recomend using it. It's terrible, in fact it once translated lietuviškai as english.

Yikes! That's terrible! Yeah, I played around with it for awhile, and even at my beginner level saw some things that weren't right. Anyway, it is better not to depend on such things or you will never learn to speak the language! You have to learn the grammar rules for yourself.

No computer program or translation program is as good as the God-given human brain----even if you aren't blessed with the "newest upgraded program version, or the high-speed processor" of a brain! :D

I went to your link and it's great. Just what I've been looking for. It's not easy finding an English - Lithuanian translator online.

It says that it uses Google translator's engine... so it's not really that good.

Taip, jūs esate teisus. Čia galime palyginti, kuriame (=kurioje) teksto dalyje šita mašina padarė neteisingą teksto vertimą.

I translated asCii's sentence with this tool...

The result was...

Jis sako, kad naudoja Google vertėjas variklio ... todėl nėra tikrai, kad geras.

... Funny translator ...

half way decent word selection but verb mood it has no idea about, take (this Latin subjunctive rendered in English):
O Lord, always may Thy grace precede and support and also show continually us to be eager for good works.
and it gives
O Valdovas, visada gali Tavo grakštumas įvykti anksčiau ir palaikymas ir taip pat rodyti nuolat mus, kad būtų trokštantis gerų darbų.
I kind of expected something like (periphrasic):
Viešpati, visada tegu Tavo malonė yra anksčiau ir palaiko bei rodo mus nuolat gerams darbams buti trokštąs.
or with the optative mood:
Viešpati, visada tesie Tavo malonė anksčiau ir tepalaikai bei terodai mus nuolat gerams darbams buti trokštąs.
