 Post subject: does knowing Russian help?

I've been wondering whether some knowledge of Russian can make us go an extra mile while learning Lithuanian.
As I have seen, both language share a certain amount of similar words,

Yes, definitely. Knowing any Slavic language can help, because Baltic languages have similar syntax (number of cases, inflectional system) and sometimes phonetics. However you're not going to find a lot of words in common, because the vocabulary is completely different.

Polish helps even more than Russian.
