Is the etymology of the word for "German" known? The word in Latvian looks cognate, but I do not know where the root comes from.

Thanks. The entry on lt.wikipedia.org didn't seem to have a section on etymology at all and the corresponding entry on lv.wikipedia.org was non-committal about the etymology of the Latvian word.
